Why Backyard Adventures ??

Recently, an unexpectedly eye-opening experience really shook me awake when I didn’t even realize I’d been asleep!

Adventures in a big red barn and on a 4-wheeler - Yehaw!

I was buried in my couch, surrounded by creature comforts and watching National Geographic’s “Into the Canyon”. It’s the documentary of Pete McBride’s truly impressive 750-mile journey backpacking the entire length of the Grand Canyon!

I was completely enthralled and seriously ‘pity-party’ wishing to be out there … even with the pain and hard, just to have such an amazing experience too!

At one point, the film switched to showing the upper Colorado River basin where Pete grew up. He shared an experience of flying over the area recently with his dad. Pete was busily telling him of adventures he’d had all over the world, when his dad simply commented that Pete may have been all over the globe, but he had yet to explore right here in his own backyard.

At that line, something in me totally shifted.

I could explore in my own backyard?!

I literally heard my seriously wishing ‘pity-party’ train screech to an abrupt halt. But that part of me that yearns to have grand adventures … stood straight up, fully awake, ready to listen!

I glanced out the window at the same scene I saw everyday. But the switch had been flipped and it was like seeing it for the first time! New and uncharted, the ideas just started to flow!

I’d been so busy dreaming and planning for adventures all over the world that I had completely missed all the ones to be explored right here, RIGHT NOW!

In my own backyard.

That was all I needed! I turned off my TV, dug out of my comfortable couch and stepped outside.

That’s when the REAL Adventure began!
