A recent experience on a beautiful, winter sunrise hike, opened my eyes in a big way, to how I want to be living my life …
The Limitations of Today
We got up super early to see the sunrise from the top of Kamiak Butte. The sun was just working it’s way over the horizon when we crested the top. It was gorgeous! A beautiful experience shared between friends!
One of those friends had faced severe, life threatening health issues in recent months. Severe enough she was lucky to be alive … and still re-learning how to walk, talk, move and sometimes even think. She walked with a cane to stabilize the parts of her body still weak and unresponsive. Our pace was slow, but the steady stream of conversation was not (!!) as we walked and talked and enjoyed our time together.
It was INCREDIBLE to watch my friend, quiet and focused amidst the jabber around her … this trip so easy to most, was a real challenge for her now. But of all the smiles at the top, hers was the absolute BIGGEST!! She having overcome this once simple hurdle, now massive, in a way ONLY SHE could understand.
What do you want your tomorrow to look like?
As I recall this experience, I can’t help but think … Melissa, What are you waiting for?! This life you have, GO LIVE IT! LIVE IT NOW! LIVE IT FULLY!! Don’t get hung up on the things limiting your experience! Don’t use them as excuses for a second longer! This is your chance to BECOME whoever you want to BE!!
And just IMAGINE what you will BE tomorrow as a result of
the adventures you live today!
I picture my friend’s massively accomplished smile at the top of a simple, winter sunrise hike … and I KNOW what I want my tomorrow to look like.

Adventure Planning
Kamiak Butte is a short 11 mile drive north of Pullman, WA. There is a park/playground, picnic area, two loop hikes up the butte (~2.25 & 3.25 mile) and a small campground. No parking fees. The park and trails are open daylight hours year round. Enjoy!
